Minor in Computer Electronics Technology
A minor in computer electronics technology provides students an opportunity to expand their interest in electronic, computers, and networks. Students get to take a good "look under the hood" of computers to design and build systems specific to user needs. Students learn how to troubleshoot problems in computer systems and networks. Students are provided with a background in computer electronics by lecture and laboratory coursework that includes electricity, electronics, computers and computer networks. The minor itself consists of six classes dealing with digital electronics, microprocessor systems, microcomputers, PC selection and troubleshooting, LAN's and PC communications, and microcomputer and network security. In addition, students may seek professional certifications in computer hardware, software and networking during or after completion of the minor. Cooperative experience in the area of computer electronics is encouraged, as is peer-to-peer interaction in computer interest groups such as ESCA (Eastern Student Computer Association), This student-led group holds regular meetings during the semester discussing current developments in networking, PC hardware and software. Overall, the minor in computer electronics prepares students for technical level work in computer related areas, where typical job responsibilities include maintaining, installing and administering computer systems and networks.
